Quick tips for misbehaving dogs

Bad Behavior when your gone

Many good dogs misbehave when they are left alone. Some have separation anxiety and others are just bored. By making your departure a positive experience for your dog, you can reduce many of the “home alone” issues.

Here are some ways to make leaving a good thing but keep the treats small so you don’t end up with a chunky dog.

  • Just before shutting the door, toss a treat over the dog's head so she has to turn to find it.
  • If you leave her in a crate, give her a treat or toy when she goes in the crate.
  • Give her a treat balls (balls that you put a few treats inside and the dog rolls around to get the treats out). Test this first, since some dogs will chew the ball open instead of rolling it.
  • Keep a few toys that your dog likes hidden in a closet. When you leave, pull out one of them. When you get home, put it away.
  • Give the dog a chew (pick a type that she has had before and you know is safe).

And remember, don’t get upset if your dog is happy to see you go. It is a reflection of how much love you leave behind.
